Competition Rules

Starting Portfolio

Each player starts the Competition with a hypothetical $200,000.

Portfolio Composition

You may invest up to 25% of your portfolio value in one share.

Brokerage

Players will be charged a commission fee per transaction of 0.1% of the value of the trade or a minimum of $25.

Interest on Un-invested Cash

A player's un-invested cash will earn interest at the rate of 0.1% per annum, calculated daily.

Borrowed Funds

Players can borrow up to $50,000 and will be charged interest at the rate of 1.0% per annum, calculated daily.
A user will get the borrowing amount, up to $50,000, when they have zero or less cash to buy a share. The borrowed amount will be taken back when a user, with borrow amount, sells a share.

Trading Hours

The TradingPlaces Competition opens for trades at 10:15am AEST and closes at 4:00pm AEST, Monday to Friday. Buy and sell orders can be placed outside of these times, but will only be processed during ASX trading hours.

Orders

Orders are transacted at live market prices and confirmed 20 minutes after they have been placed. Orders will only be processed during Trading Hours.

Market Orders

Buy or sell a nominated volume of shares at the prevailing market price at the time of the transaction. A buy order will be executed at the current offer price and a sell order at the current bid price. The price that a player receives will be the prevailing market price, which may differ from the 20 minute delayed price observed in the game.

Limit Orders

Buy or sell a nominated volume of shares at a designated price. Buys will be transacted once the share is offered at the selected price (or lower) and a sell will be transacted when the share is bid at the selected price (or higher). Limit orders will expire after 24 hours if not filled.

Order Cancellation

To cancel an order, go to the 'Open Orders' tab and select the order you wish to cancel. 'Market Orders' can only be canceled outside of market hours. 'Limit Orders' can be canceled at any time. 'Limit Orders' cancelled during market hours will disappear from your 'Open Orders' screen after 20 minutes if the order has not already been processed.

Shares Available to Trade

Shares listed in the ASX300 at the start of the competition are available to trade in the game.

Trade Volume Limits

The volume of any one trade in a share can be no more than 50% of the total volume traded for that day or the previous day, which ever is greater.

Rankings

A player can find out their current position by clicking on the 'Rankings' tab. The total portfolio value is calculated from closing prices on the latest trading day. Players who have not traded will not be ranked and are not eligible for prizes

End of the Portfolio Value

A players final competition standing will depend on their equity value at the end of the game period. Equity value is calculated by the value of portfolio holdings plus cash minus borrowings.

Performance Evaluation

While fund managers are evaluated in terms of returns and risk, TradingPlaces ranks players by performance only and does not adjust for the risk of the portfolio.

Multiple Registrations

Students are permitted to register and use one account only per valid .edu.au email address. TradingPlaces reserves the right to disqualify students who trade using several accounts. These students will also be ineligible for prizes.

Portfolio Adjustment

TradingPlaces reserves the right to adjust any portfolio in the interest of competition fairness.
